When preparing for GCSE Spanish qualification, students will be requested to cover all the sub-themes within the main three broad themes (i.e. ‘Identity and culture’, ‘Wales and the World – areas of interest’ and ‘Current and future study and employment’) through the four language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

🌵Spanish Club Bastos offers a carefully designed pathway through Spanish, supporting learners from their first encounters with the language through to active speaking, GCSE preparation and continued communication beyond the exam.

Through 30- or 60-minute small-group sessions with a qualified Spanish tutor, learners experience Spanish in an interactive, meaningful and memorable way, with plenty of opportunities to listen, respond, speak and use the language actively.

What it helps with:

Build familiarity and confidence using Spanish.
Consolidate and actively use language through guided practice.
Develop speaking and interaction skills over time.
Provide structured support for GCSE preparation when learners reach that stage.
Keep Spanish active and relevant beyond the exam.

Group availability depends on registrations, previous Spanish experience and timetable compatibility, so not every stage or time will necessarily open every term.

A connected online Spanish pathway for children and teenagers, from their first encounters with the language to GCSE preparation and continued communication beyond the exam.

Each stage has a different purpose. We look at the learner’s age, current Spanish, previous experience, goals, maturity and group fit before recommending the most suitable course.

Which stage is right for my child?

Age is a useful starting point, but it does not decide placement on its own.

Bastos Foundations · Ages 7–12

For children beginning Spanish or needing regular, positive exposure to the language. Learners listen, respond, repeat, play and begin using simple Spanish through stories and guided interaction.

Main focus: familiarity and early participation.

Bastos Speaking · Ages 12–14

For learners who already have some contact with Spanish but need more opportunities to use it actively. Sessions include guided conversation, role play, picture description, questions and supported interaction.

Main focus: turning familiar Spanish into spoken responses.

GCSE Spanish Course · Ages 14–16

For students preparing for GCSE Spanish who would benefit from clearer structure, regular practice and more active participation.Before enrolment, we consider the learner’s GCSE stage, specification or exam board, current Spanish and group fit.

Main focus: structured, exam-aware preparation and active language use.

Bastos +16 · Ages 16–18

For older teenagers who are finishing or have completed GCSE-level Spanish and want the language to remain part of their life. Sessions explore opinions, culture, travel, future plans and everyday topics rather than focusing on direct grade intervention.

Main focus: continued communication beyond the exam syllabus.

The learning and teaching resources employed in the GCSE Spanish tuition are aimed to reinforce, consolidate and expand the language content taught at school. Moreover, multiple coursebooks (which you do not need to buy!) are taken into consideration for the lesson planning such as:

I highly recommend this company to anyone serious about learning Spanish. The service is very friendly and professional in every way. I took 10 weekly conversational Spanish classes on line with Carmen in order to gain more confidence after some years of not using Spanish.
I was unsure of how well the online scenario would work but Carmen is a very intuitive teacher and expertly tailored the classes to my own personal interests and learning style. She always sent feedback and after class notes very promptly through dropbox and her suggestions for further learning were hugely useful. I can personally attest to the quality of this place as lessons are creatively taught through an incredible variety of in lesson games. This, combined with an extensive repertoire of learning material, means lessons never became the "sit there and listen" nightmare you find with lesser quality tutors. The lessons are tailored to you and adapt to your needs and Lighthouse Spanish Academy enabled me to achieve my desired grade with a confidence I doubt I would have without them. While tutors are never a sure-fire way to guarantee a high grade, this place is as close as it gets with its professional and extremely well constructed lessons.

My husband and I have been having Spanish lessons with Lucia and then Lidia for a few months now and the progress we have made has been brilliant. Both teachers have put us at ease and made our lessons really varied and enjoyable and the difference it has made to our confidence and ability has been fantastic. Both Lucia and Lidia are patient and make the lessons fun and varied, with lots of different ways of learning, which suit both myself and my husband who have different learning styles. In recent weeks we have changed tutors to have classes with Lidia and she has taken the time to get to know us on a personal level which is helping us learn how to have conversations about things which are relevant to us. We were slightly daunted at the prospect of starting lessons during COVID but the Lighthouse Spanish team are well equipped for online learning and it hasn't been an issue at all.
